PalmOS on the way out?

PalmSource, which is the OS side of the Palm conglomerate, has suddenly (and quite unexpectedly) been sold to Japanese developer Access Co. This is right out of the blue, and may or may not have some serious implications on the future of the Palm platform. The biggest question mark surrounds Access Co's Linux-based embedded browser - instead of a traditional OS, Access provides a browser-based interface for a large number of wireless phones, digital televisions, and PDAs. The upshot is that the browser is the OS, and the user is insulated into a single seamless interface. Will the PalmOS be replaced with a browser? Will the Palm platform go Linux? At this point, everyone is mum. Stay tuned.
