LaCie checks in with the first useful application of biometric technology in the personal computing arena - seamless fingerprint identification for portable hard drives. It's your typical 40 or 80GB portable USB drive, same old same old, but the thing automatically locks down until you swipe your fingerprint across the built-in sensor. Since pocket and portable drives are the most-commonly lost pieces or personal hardware, this sort of security makes a ton of sense. You might lose your drive, but at least no one will be getting their jollies off your homemade porn.
