Emperor Palpatine as George W. Bush? Nah ....

Right-wing nutbars across the good ol' U.S. of A. are mobilizing against The Revenge Of The Sith, saying that Episode III of the Star Wars saga is an "attack" on George W. Bush, freedom, mom, and (for all I know) apple pie. Newsweek has been the main standard-bearer for this particular crusade, but the hysteria has spread to semi-literate ranting and indignant posts in red state blogs, promises of boycotts and picketing, and actual mainstream news coverage.

Where did this bizarro concept start? Apparently, right here. This is the mope who kicked it all off, and this is his rationalization for one of the most far-fetched and ridiculous editorializations that I have ever read. In case you have never heard of Slant magazine, suffice to say that (a) you are not alone in your ignorance of this particular periodical, and (b) they are (as far as I can tell) Microsoft whores.

As far as the "real" meaning of Episode III, there are two fatal arguments against this particular right-wing diatribe:

One - the movie was written and mostly completed long before George W and his happy gang decided to invent some reasons to invade Iraq.

Two - the erstwhile Emperor Palpatine and his minions are noticeably less repressive than the current inhabitants of the White House.

Case closed. Bring on the flick.
